He worked as Assistant professor for 4 years contributing not only in teaching, academics and research but also striving to render exemplary patient care both to adults and pediatric population of rural Missouri. To date, he has over 10 publications in various nephrology journals, several poster presentations and is a member of esteemed Fellow of American Society of Nephrology which is reserved for only few.Dr. Bichu is excited to bring his experience and expertise to serve the medical needs of the community of Hampton roads. He believes in rendering the highest quality care to his patients and helping patients in achieving an individualized plan of care in maintaining their healthcare. Debra Castner, NP

Debra Castner RN, MSN, APN, CNN, graduated from the University of Pennsylvania Nurse Practitioner Program and has a Graduate Certificate in Palliative Care from Villanova University. She has 40 years of nephrology nursing experience in clinical management and education of nurses, technicians, and patients. She has expertise in hemodialysis, home dialysis therapies, post-kidney transplant care, chronic kidney disease management, and palliative care. Mrs. Castner has numerous professional presentations, journal articles, and textbook contributions. She has served on numerous committees for the American Nephrology Nurses Association, including as a member of the board of directors. Mrs. Castner is board certified as a Nephrology Nurse and Adult Nurse Practitioner. She enjoys gardening and travel.
Timothy Curley, MD

Timothy Curley, MD joined the practice in 2004. He is especially interested in Lupus Nephritis. He strives to improve kidney function when possible, or to at least slow progression of kidney disease when reversal is not possible. Usama Hussein, MD

Office: Virginia Beach
Dr. Hussein completed his training in nephrology and transplantation at St. Raphael/Yale School of Medicine in New Haven, Connecticut and Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minnesota. Respectively, he is the Director of Home Dialysis programs at Nephrology Associates of Tidewater, and has vast experience in peritoneal dialysis and home hemodialysis, has lectured across the country to groups of physicians on this topic, and trained 100s of patient’s on home dialysis modalities. Dr. Hussein created the Centers of Excellence for home dialysis therapies, and started the mobile training unit to serve patients in remote areas or with transportation difficulties. Dr. Hussein’s innovative ideas in this field have been adopted by many programs across the country. He is a core faculty member at EVMS and is an Assistant Professor of Nephrology in the Department of Medicine where he actively participates in students, residents and fellows education and a key member of the Kidney and Pancreas Transplantation program at Norfolk General Hospital.

Varun Malhotra, M.D. joined the practice in 2018. He completed his Nephrology fellowship from Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He worked in a group practice in Pennsylvania where he was elected as Vice Chairman of the Department of Internal Medicine at the affiliated teaching hospital. He has published over 25 scientific articles and book chapters. He has been recognized by many organizations and his peers for clinical care and academic achievements. Dr. Maxim Mirovski graduated from Russian State Medical University in Moscow, Russia. Dr. Rust has been the medical director of the Sentara Norfolk Kidney Transplant Program since 2010. Emily Burke, PA-C

Emily received her Bachelor of Science degree from Old Dominion University in 2014 and Master of Physician Assistant degree from EVMS in 2018. Prior to PA school, she worked as a clinical lab assistant, dealing largely with renal and cardiac transplant patients. Her past three years were spent in the practice of pediatrics orthopedics, she changed specialties to treat end stage renal and chronic kidney disease patients. Ms. Burke’s goal is to help patients manage their comorbidities to delay progression of kidney disease as well as provide care to patients on dialysis and assist in providing them support and care for their best quality of life. She believes communication and building strong patient-provider relationships is the key to good healthcare. Outside of work, Emily enjoys all outdoor activities which include gardening, sports, and spending time with her family.
Martinique Lewis, FNP-C

Martinique “Marti” received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Ball State University in 2013. She received her Master of Science in Nursing with a specialization in Family Nurse Practitioner from South University in 2019 and is certified by the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners. Ms. Lewis has 2 years of experience in medical/surgical and 5 years of outpatient hemodialysis experience. She is originally from Indiana and moved to the Hampton Roads are in 2016. Ms. Lewis believes in bringing compassion and listening to her patients to provide the best care. During her free time, she loves to cook, read, write poetry, and attend comic-con events and concerts.
Monica Layne, NP

Monica Layne received a bachelor’s and master’s degree in nursing from East Tennessee State University. During her nursing career, she spent ten years working as a registered nurse at Shore Memorial Hospital in Nassawadox, Virginia. In addition, she has worked in the primary care setting for three years as a Nurse Practitioner. She is board certified as a Family Nurse Practitioner from the American Nurses Credentialing Center. Mrs. Layne was born and raised on the Eastern Shore of Virginia. She has also spent time in northern Virginia, Tennessee, and Oregon before returning home on Eastern Shore. She enjoys being close to family and all that the Shore has to offer.
Jennifer Stanley, FNP, DNP

Jennifer received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from University of Texas Arlington. She received her Master of Science in Nursing with specialization as a Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) from Frontier Nursing University in 2018 and is certified by the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners. She furthered her education and received her Doctorate of Nursing Practice at Frontier Nursing University in 2020 completing her research project on Advance Care Planning. Mrs. Stanley has worked in various areas of nursing including pediatrics, outpatient hemodialysis, interventional radiology, and oncology. She is originally from California and moved to the Hampton Roads area in 2016. Mrs. Stanley developed a deep interest in Nephrology during her nursing career which drove her to further her education. She believes an educated patient is a well-informed patient and values compassionate care. During her free time, she enjoys her family farm, spending time with family, and baking.
Julie Shepherd, MSN, FNP-BC

Julie began a career as a registered nurse over ten years ago. After five years as an emergency department nurse, she began working in dialysis and found a passion for home dialysis. She spent two years working in interventional radiology and vascular intervention surgery. She completed a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Old Dominion University in 2013 and a Master of Science in Nursing with a focus of Family Nurse Practitioner from Walden University in 2019. She believes communication and education are critical components of patient care.
Megan Slappe, FNP-BC

Megan received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing at The University of Miami in 2010. She has three years of experience as a Registered Nurse in a Medical/Surgical and Oncology unit. Her passion is to provide advanced healthcare services to patients which led her to pursue her Master of Science in Nursing with a focus in Family Nurse Practitioner at The University of Miami in 2014.
As a Family Nurse Practitioner, she practiced for several years at a Community Health Center managing chronic diseases and treating acute illnesses. This experience in primary care and managing patients who are diagnosed with various stages of CKD prompted her interest in Nephrology to further her knowledge and skills to treat renal patients. For the past 3 years, she gained experience with the Nephrology group at the Medical University of South Carolina. Megan believes compassion, communication and patient education are all critical elements to providing great care for our patients.
Outside of work, Megan enjoys crafting, outdoor activities including paddle boarding and kayaking, and loves taking her rescue pup for long walks.

Frances Briscoe, NP-C received her Associate’s Degree in nursing and her Bachelor’s degree in Science of Nursing from Norfolk State University. She completed her Nurse Practitioner at South University in Virginia Beach and is certified by The American Association of Nurse Practitioners as a Family Nurse Practitioner.Ms. Briscoe has worked as a surgical trauma stepdown nurse, and most recently as a critical care nurse. Ms. McWhite received a degree in Registered Nursing from Old Dominion University in 2009 before completing her Nurse Practitioner training at George Washington University and receiving her Board Certification in Adult-Gerontology from the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners. During her nursing career, she provided chronic dialysis care, acute care, transplant coordination, and vascular access management. This experience led her to pursue working as a Nephrology Nurse Practitioner, which she now does with an emphasis on quality and compassionate patient care. Ms. McWhite grew up traveling the world in a military family. She now enjoys spending time with her family, going to the beach and traveling on her own time.
