From there, he worked as a nephrologist in Charleston, WV for 5 years where he gained extensive experience in dealing with all aspects of kidney disease. His main goal is to strive to deliver excellent care to his patients. One way to achieve this is bringing the latest innovations in the field of nephrology closer to bedside. He is mainly interested in chronic kidney disease, electrolyte disorders, diabetic nephropathy and bone-mineral disorders. Prasad Bichu, MD

Dr. Prasad Bichu completed his residency training in Internal Medicine-Pediatrics and fellowship in Nephrology from University of Missouri-Columbia. He worked as Assistant professor for four years contributing not only in teaching, academics, and research but also striving to render exemplary patient care both to adults and pediatric population of rural Missouri. To date, he has over ten publications in various nephrology journals, several poster presentations and is a member of the esteemed Fellow of American Society of Nephrology, which is reserved for only few. Dr. Bichu is excited to bring his experience and expertise to serve the medical needs of the community of Hampton roads. He believes in rendering the highest quality care to his patients and helping patients in achieving an individualized plan of care in maintaining their healthcare. Patients can truly trust him for researching the best possible options in their care. He practices out of the Harbourview office in North Suffolk and Portsmouth office. Debra Castner, NP
Debra Castner RN, MSN, APN, CNN, graduated from the University of Pennsylvania Nurse Practitioner Program and has a Graduate Certificate in Palliative Care from Villanova University. She has 40 years of nephrology nursing experience in clinical management and education of nurses, technicians, and patients. She has expertise in hemodialysis, home dialysis therapies, post-kidney transplant care, chronic kidney disease management, and palliative care. Mrs. Castner has numerous professional presentations, journal articles, and textbook contributions. She has served on numerous committees for the American Nephrology Nurses Association, including as a member of the board of directors. Mrs. Castner is board certified as a Nephrology Nurse and Adult Nurse Practitioner. She enjoys gardening and travel.
Timothy Curley, MD

Timothy Curley, MD joined the practice in 2004. He is especially interested in Lupus Nephritis. He strives to improve kidney function when possible, or to at least slow progression of kidney disease when reversal is not possible. He strongly believes in building lasting relationships with patients, taking time to explain and answer questions, treating each patient with kindness and respect. Michael Grassia, MD joined the practice in 2002. He is especially interested in chronic kidney disease in seniors. Usama Hussein, MD

Dr. Hussein completed his training in nephrology and transplantation at St. Raphael/Yale School of Medicine in New Haven, Connecticut and Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minnesota. Respectively, he is the Director of Home Dialysis programs at Nephrology Associates of Tidewater, and has vast experience in peritoneal dialysis and home hemodialysis, has lectured across the country to groups of physicians on this topic, and trained 100s of patient’s on home dialysis modalities. Dr. Hussein created the Centers of Excellence for home dialysis therapies, and started the mobile training unit to serve patients in remote areas or with transportation difficulties. Dr. Hussein’s innovative ideas in this field have been adopted by many programs across the country. He is a core faculty member at EVMS and is an Assistant Professor of Nephrology in the Department of Medicine where he actively participates in students, residents and fellows education and a key member of the Kidney and Pancreas Transplantation program at Norfolk General Hospital.

Varun Malhotra, MD, FASN

Dr. Varun Malhotra, MD, FASN, became part of our team in 2018. After completing his Nephrology fellowship at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia, he garnered significant experience in a Pennsylvania group practice. There, he was elected Vice Chairman of the Department of Internal Medicine at the affiliated teaching hospital. His active involvement extended to various department committees, and he played a crucial role in the teaching and training of residents and medical students. Board-certified in Internal Medicine and Nephrology, he holds initial certification as a Clinical Hypertension Specialist from the American Society of Hypertension. Specializing in Nephrology and hypertension, Dr. Malhotra's interests encompass electrolyte disorders, cardiorenal syndrome, and home dialysis. He plays a pivotal role in teaching at Eastern Virginia Medical School (EVMS) and serves as the associate program director of the Nephrology Fellowship Program at EVMS. Outside of his professional life, Dr. Malhotra, a devoted family man, enjoys traveling, soccer, and tennis during his free time.

Dr. McCune returned from his fellowships and joined the practice in 1991. He has been active with the Kidney and Pancreas Transplant program at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital throughout his time in the practice. He is a professor of Medicine at Eastern Virginia Medical School, (EVMS) and has been actively involved with teaching Medical Students and Resident Physicians. He continues to lead research projects in all aspects of Nephrology. He has published over 25 scientific articles and book chapters. He has been recognized by many organizations and his peers for clinical care and academic achievements. He is a retired Colonel with the Army National Guard. He sits on the board of Hope House Foundation.
Maxim Mirovski, MD

Dr. Maxim Mirovski graduated from Russian State Medical University in Moscow, Russia. He completed Internal Medicine residency at Henry Ford Hospital, Detroit, MI and worked as an internist for 6 years in Portsmouth, VA prior to completing his Nephrology fellowship at Virginia Commonwealth University, Richmond, VA. He has been with Nephrology Associates of the Tidewater since July 2007. His special interests include acute kidney injury, diabetic kidney disease and hypertension. Dr. Mirovski is board certified in Nephrology and internal Medicine. He practices out of the Norfolk office and his primary hospital is Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. Dr. Mirovski is married with three daughters. In his free time, he enjoys working out, spending time with his family and travel.

Dr. Mirza completed his internal medicine residency at Drexel University College of Medicine in 2007 and worked as a Hospitalist in Virginia for 10 years. Dr. Mirza completed his Nephrology Fellowship at Eastern Virginia Medical School in 2019 and upon completion, joined Nephrology Associates of Tidewater. He is inspired by the latest advancements in the field of nephrology and his passion for kidney disease encouraged him to pursue further training. Dr. Mirza published articles and poster presentations in the American Society of Nephrology as well as other nephrology journals. His focus is chronic kidney disease, renal transplantation, electrolyte disorders, bone-mineral disorders, and home dialysis. He practices out of the Princess Anne office and his primary hospital is Sentara Leigh Hospital. In his free time, he enjoys spending time with his children and fishing.
Arunava Paul, MD

Dr. Paul joined the practice in 2024. He completed his fellowship in nephrology at Eastern Virginia Medical School, Norfolk VA, and residency in internal medicine at Coney Island Hospital, Brooklyn NY. After completing his residency, Dr. Paul practiced inpatient and outpatient internal medicine for more than ten years. His desire for helping patients with kidney diseases motivated further training. He is interested in research preventing the progression of chronic kidney diseases and innovation in dialysis treatment. He practices out of the Suffolk Office and his primary hospital is Sentara Obici Hospital. Dr. Paul is married with two children. He enjoys traveling with family and friends and playing soccer, tennis, biking and listening to music.
Richard Plasse, DO

Dr. Plasse joined the practice in 2024 after 11 years of serving in the US Navy. He first came to the area in 2016 to continue his residency training in Internal Medicine at Naval Medical Center Portsmouth (NMCP) and then completed his nephrology fellowship at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, MD. As a staff nephrologist, Dr. Plasse returned to NMCP, where he actively trained medical students and resident physicians. During this time, he held a teaching appointment with the Uniformed Services University of Health Sciences (USUHS) and was awarded the James J. Leonard Excellence in teaching Internal Medicine. He is board certified in Internal Medicine and Nephrology. His clinical interests are treating glomerular disorders, managing renal transplant and chronic kidney disease patients. Dr. Plasse is married with 2 children and enjoys traveling with them, as well as fishing, golf, and skiing in his free time.
Suresh Rijhwani, MD

Suresh Rijhwani, MD joined the practice in 2003. He is interested in taking care of kidney transplant patients and patients with acute kidney failure. He is especially interested in care of the acutely ill hospitalized patients and patients with kidney failure who also have heart failure. Harlan Rust, MD

Dr. Rust joined the practice in 2006 and works out of the Fort Norfolk Office. He completed a fellowship in nephrology at Indiana University and a residency in internal medicine in the U.S. Air Force. He graduated from Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia in 1998. Dr. Rust has been the medical director of the Sentara Norfolk Kidney Transplant Program since 2010. He has an intense interest in transplant, but also enjoys caring for a wide variety of other kidney diseases. He has been named a “Top Doc” in Coastal Virginia Magazine for five years in a row.

Dr. Zafar joined NAT in 2010 after competing training at New York Medical College. Anthony Zydlewski, MD joined the practice in 1998. He is especially interested in the care of patients receiving peritoneal dialysis and in-home hemodialysis. Yolanda Brooks, A GNP-C
Yolanda is a board-certified nurse practitioner with a focus in adult/geriatrics. She has over a decade of hospital and health care experience. She received her Master of Science in Nursing from Walden University. Prior to pursuing her masters in nursing, Yolanda worked at local hospitals in the Hampton Roads area as a critical care nurse. As a Nurse Practitioner she worked briefly in medical oncology, and before joining Nephrology Associates of Tidewater, she spent 3 years at a private Nephrology practice treating dialysis and CKD patients. Yolanda enjoys spending her free time gardening and trying new recipes.
Emily Burke, PA-C
Emily received her Bachelor of Science degree from Old Dominion University in 2014 and Master of Physician Assistant degree from EVMS in 2018. Prior to PA school, she worked as a clinical lab assistant, dealing largely with renal and cardiac transplant patients. She spent three years in the practice of pediatrics orthopedics. She changed specialties to treat end-stage renal and chronic kidney disease patients. Ms. Burke’s goal is to help patients manage their comorbidities to delay the progression of kidney disease as well as provide care to patients on dialysis and assist in providing them support and care for their best quality of life. She believes communication and building strong patient-provider relationships is the key to good healthcare. Outside of work, Emily enjoys all outdoor activities which include gardening, sports, and spending time with her family.
Michael David, MSN, FNP-BC
Michael Lloren David received his Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Angeles University Foundation in the Philippines in 1994. He graduated from the United States University in 2023 with a Master of Science in Nursing specializing as a Family Nurse Practitioner. He is board certified by the American Nurses Credentialing Center. Mr. David has been a dialysis nurse since 1997 and has over 25 years of Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) and End Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) experience working in the Philippines and the United Kingdom. He moved to the United States in 2007 after being hired by Fresenius Medical Center in London, where he maintained his passion for the dialysis industry. He believes that compassionate care and understanding of the patient's illness is a key factor in compliance and empowerment toward self-care.
Outside of work, Michael and his family share a love for travel. He also enjoys amateur photography and playing trivia.
Ashka Everette, FNP-C
Ashka completed a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Norfolk State University in 1998. In 2023 she completed a Master of Science in Nursing with specialization as a Family Nurse Practitioner from Chamberlain University. She has worked as a medical surgical nurse, intensive care nurse and as a kidney/pancreas transplant coordinator at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. It was her work as a transplant coordinator that inspired her to pursue a graduate degree. It is her goal to promote education and patient centered care to empower patients. Ashka enjoys spending time with family, cooking, and volunteering in church.
Monica Layne, NP
Monica Layne received a bachelor’s and master’s degree in nursing from East Tennessee State University. During her nursing career, she spent ten years working as a registered nurse at Shore Memorial Hospital in Nassawadox, Virginia. In addition, she has worked in the primary care setting for three years as a Nurse Practitioner. She is board certified as a Family Nurse Practitioner from the American Nurses Credentialing Center. Mrs. Layne was born and raised on the Eastern Shore of Virginia. She has also spent time in northern Virginia, Tennessee, and Oregon before returning home on Eastern Shore. She enjoys being close to family and all that the Shore has to offer.

Martinique “Marti” received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Ball State University in 2013. She received her Master of Science in Nursing with a specialization in Family Nurse Practitioner from South University in 2019 and is certified by the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners. Ms. Lewis has 2 years of experience in medical/surgical and 5 years of outpatient hemodialysis experience. She is originally from Indiana and moved to the Hampton Roads are in 2016. Ms. Lewis believes in bringing compassion and listening to her patients to provide the best care. During her free time, she loves to cook, read, write poetry, and attend comic-con events and concerts.
Sandrine Mapokam, FNP-BC
Sandrine Mapokam is a family nurse practitioner certified by the American Nurses Credentialing Center.
Sandrine received her bachelor's degree in nursing from Towson University (Maryland) in 2016. With this degree, she worked as a registered nurse (RN) for six and a half years. She worked as a med-surg/Oncology RN for two years and then switched to in-center hemodialysis, caring for patients with acute kidney injury and end-stage renal diseases. Sandrine then decided to advance her nursing career and obtained a master's degree in nursing from Indiana State University in 2022.
Sandrine believes that providing patient-centered care and using ethical communication skills are effective ways to improve patients' outcomes. She is originally from Cameroon, lived in Maryland for seven years, and then moved to the Hampton Roads area in 2017.
In her spare time, she enjoys playing game nights with her family, singing karaoke, and trying new oriental cuisines.
Melisa Zamora MSN, FNP-C
Melisa Zamora is a board-certified Family Nurse Practitioner. She began her nursing career in 1997 as a Certified Nursing Assistant. She has since gone on to receive an Associate’s Degree in Nursing from Walters State Community College, a Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing from King College, as well as a Master’s Degree in Nursing from Lincoln Memorial University. She has worked in many modalities during her nursing career, including the emergency department, vascular access, weight management, and family practice. This has given her a strong clinical foundation in which to provide her patients with superior care.
Melisa is originally from Tennessee and moved to the Eastern Shore in 2019. She has a passion for preventative medicine, using holistic and integrative strategies to give the best possible care for her patients.
Outside of work, she enjoys cooking, hiking, yoga, meditation, and spending time on the water, and playing with her 2 dogs.
Julie Shepherd, MSN, FNP-BC
Julie initiated her healthcare journey as a Registered Nurse over fourteen years ago, embarking on a career marked by dedication and skill. Her initial five years in the high-paced Emergency Department laid a solid foundation for her subsequent roles. It was during her tenure in dialysis that Julie discovered her fervent passion for home dialysis and patient education, empowering individuals in their healthcare journeys.
Her expertise further expanded into the specialized fields of Interventional Radiology and Vascular Intervention Surgery, where she contributed significantly for two years. Julie's academic pursuits have been equally impressive, beginning with her completion of a Registered Nursing Certificate from Sentara College of Health Sciences in 2009. She furthered her education with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Old Dominion University in 2013, followed by a Master of Science in Nursing, specializing as a Family Nurse Practitioner, in 2019.

Megan Slappe, FNP-BC
Megan received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing at The University of Miami in 2010. She has three years of experience as a Registered Nurse in a Medical/Surgical and Oncology unit. Her passion is to provide advanced healthcare services to patients which led her to pursue her Master of Science in Nursing with a focus in Family Nurse Practitioner at The University of Miami in 2014.
As a Family Nurse Practitioner, she practiced for several years at a Community Health Center managing chronic diseases and treating acute illnesses. This experience in primary care and managing patients who are diagnosed with various stages of CKD prompted her interest in Nephrology to further her knowledge and skills to treat renal patients. For the past 3 years, she gained experience with the Nephrology group at the Medical University of South Carolina. Megan believes compassion, communication and patient education are all critical elements to providing great care for our patients.
Outside of work, Megan enjoys crafting, outdoor activities including paddle boarding and kayaking, and loves taking her rescue pup for long walks.
Jennifer Stanley, FNP, DNP
Jennifer received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from University of Texas Arlington. She received her Master of Science in Nursing with specialization as a Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) from Frontier Nursing University in 2018 and is certified by the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners. She furthered her education and received her Doctorate of Nursing Practice at Frontier Nursing University in 2020 completing her research project on Advance Care Planning. Mrs. Stanley has worked in various areas of nursing including pediatrics, outpatient hemodialysis, interventional radiology, and oncology. She is originally from California and moved to the Hampton Roads area in 2016. Mrs. Stanley developed a deep interest in Nephrology during her nursing career which drove her to further her education. She believes an educated patient is a well-informed patient and values compassionate care. During her free time, she enjoys her family farm, spending time with family, and baking.

He has been active with the Kidney and Pancreas Transplant program at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital throughout his time in the practice. He has been actively involved with teaching Medical Students and Resident Physicians. He continues to lead research projects in all aspects of Nephrology. He has published over 25 scientific articles and book chapters. He has been recognized by many organizations and his peers for clinical care and academic achievements. He is a Colonel in the Army National Guard. He sits on the board of Hope House Foundation.
Ms. McWhite received a degree in Registered Nursing from Old Dominion University in 2009 before completing her Nurse Practitioner training at George Washington University and receiving her Board Certification in Adult-Gerontology from the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners. During her nursing career, she provided chronic dialysis care, acute care, transplant coordination, and vascular access management. This experience led her to pursue working as a Nephrology Nurse Practitioner, which she now does with an emphasis on quality and compassionate patient care. Ms. McWhite grew up traveling the world in a military family. She now enjoys spending time with her family, going to the beach and traveling on her own time.
Dr. Maxim Mirovski graduated from Russian State Medical University in Moscow, Russia. He completed Internal Medicine residency at Henry Ford Hospital, Detroit, MI and worked as an internist for 6 years in Portsmouth, VA prior to completing his Nephrology fellowship at Virginia Commonwealth University, Richmond, VA. He has been with Nephrology Associates of the Tidewater since July 2007. His special interests include acute kidney injury, diabetic kidney disease and hypertension. Dr. Mirovski is board certified in Nephrology and internal Medicine. He practices out of the Norfolk office and his primary hospital is Bon Secours DePaul Medical Center. Dr. Mirovski is married with three daughters. In his free time he enjoys working out, spending time with his family and travel.
Suresh Rijhwani, MD joined the practice in 2003. He is especially interested in care of the acutely ill hospitalized patients. He practices out of the Fort Norfolk Office and his primary hospital is Sentara Norfolk General Hospital.
Dr. Rust joined the practice in 2006 and works out of the Fort Norfolk Office. He completed a fellowship in nephrology at Indiana University and a residency in internal medicine in the U.S. Air Force. He graduated from Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia in 1998. Dr. Rust has been the medical director of the Sentara Norfolk Kidney Transplant Program since 2010. He has an intense interest in transplant, but also enjoys caring for a wide variety of other kidney diseases. He has been named a "Top Doc" in Coastal Virginia Magazine for five years in a row.
Stanley Smith, MD joined the practice in 1982. He is especially interested in chronic kidney disease. He practices out of the Suffolk office and his primary hospitals are Sentara Obici Hospital and Southampton Memorial Hospital.

Dr. Zafar joined the practice in the summer of 2010. He earned his medical degree from Q.A.U. Islamabad, Pakistan. He completed his Internal Medicine Residency in 2007 & Nephrology Fellowship in 2010 from New York Medical College. He is board certified in Internal Medicine & Nephrology. He holds additional designation as a Clinical Hypertension Specialist from American Society of Hypertension. He is the Medical Director of FMC Dominion Dialysis unit in Chesapeake. He works out of our Chesapeake & Eastern Shore offices, accepting new patients and has consulting privileges in all area hospitals. He enjoys outdoor activities with family, traveling & Nature conservation.
Anthony Zydlewski, MD joined the practice in 1998. He is especially interested in the care of patients receiving peritoneal dialysis and in-home hemodialysis. He practices out of the Norfolk office and his primary hospitals are Sentara Leigh Hospital and Riverside Shore Memorial Hospital. Dr. Zydlewski enjoys fishing and running and is a Boston Red Sox fan. Dr. Zydlewski served in the United States Army.
